Jamila Sullu

Jamila Sulu is a Human Rights Lawyer and Development Practitioner with over 15 years of extensive experience in the field of human rights, and the considerable knowledge in international development practice.


She holds a Master’s degree (M.A. Development Studies – Major: Human Rights, Gender and Conflict Studies) from the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. She also holds a Bachelor of Law degree (LLB) from Tumaini University Dar es Salaam College and a diploma in International Relations and Diplomacy from the Centre for Foreign Relations (CFR) in Dar es Salaam.


She has worked as Investigation Officer in the Legal Services Department at the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG) from 2007 to 2019. Her responsibilities included coordinating and drafting international human rights reports submitted to various regional and international human rights mechanisms such as the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council, UN Treaty Bodies, and the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR). Other responsibilities included providing legal advice to the human rights victims, undertaking field research and public enquiry on human rights issues, conducting human rights education to various stakeholders such as law enforcers, civil servants at central and local government levels, human rights activists from civil society organisations (CSOs), and maintaining the working relationship between CHRAGG, government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), the Judiciary, CSOs and UN agencies in Tanzania.


Ms. Sulu has previously also worked with Amnesty International Tanzania Chapter as Media and Campaign Coordinator responsible for liaising with the media and coordinating regional and international human rights thematic campaigns at domestic level.


From February to October 2018, Ms. Sulu worked on part-time basis with the Human Rights Foundation (HRF) based in New York, USA, on the UPR project in which she helped in drafting UPR stakeholder submissions for selected African countries as well as drafting a human rights petition submitted to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. From November 2018 to date, Ms. Sulu has also been providing technical advice on voluntary basis to a non-governmental organisation namely Vital Aid Foundation (VAF) based in the Hague on gender and migration issues including conducting training to refugees and other migrants in the Netherlands. Ms Sulu currently resides in the Netherlands.
